Confidentiality

The law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission.

Limitations include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse are mandated by the Code of Virginia to be reported immediately to legal authorities.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in insuring their safety. However, if he/she continues to be uncooperative, I will take further measures provided by law, without their permission to ensure their safety.
  • If there is a court ordered subpoena issued for the therapist's appearance and/or records the client will be notified immediately and fees not covered by insurance will apply.
